An eco-friendly, fairer approach to water charges

The importance of water metering has been illustrated by the findings of “the first cycle of water-meter readings, according to Irish Water”. 

A staggering 46,000 tonnes per day of this valuable commodity have been identified as lost.

Based on the above findings, if water meters were installed in every household, the potential savings would enable the Government to put a moratorium on water charges in return for meters being universally installed.

This would also necessitate each household being informed regularly of its usage, without being charged for same.

This could not carry on forever, but it may allow meaningful discussion and on an even playing pitch, with both sides better informed of the costs.

This may also be an incentive to reduce water usage, thereby producing cost-savings.
