Cultural revolution a must for a Jewish state to survive

While Dr Kevin McCarthy’s previous predictions on the outcome of the recent Israeli election were way off the mark, he’s on safer ground when he quotes (Irish Examiner, Letters, March 31) from the excellent survey of attitudes in Gaza, which was carried out by the reliable Palestinian Centre for Policy and Survey Research.

Cultural revolution a must for a Jewish state to survive

The survey shows the indomitable spirit of the people of Gaza in the face of the illegal blockade, and the many onslaughts carried out by the Israeli military.

The Hamas rockets he mentions are mere pin-pricks compared to the massive munitions used by Israel on Gaza, with homes, schools and hospitals subjected to vindictive attacks.

Indeed, with this in mind, Israel’s leading newspaper, Haaretz, has written that Israel’s military commanders have become more religiously Zionist.

Haaretz also speaks of an increasing sectarianism in Israel’s nationalistic and religious education system, while the laws and courts have become more Zionist.

Kevin McCarthy is correct to fear for the future of the two-state solution for Palestine/Israel, so perhaps he should join with Haaretz in its recent call for a Jewish cultural revolution in Israel.

This, Haaretz believes, is necessary for the survival of a Jewish state.
