We need to clean up Cork’s historic bridges

I used to have a photograph — now sadly mislaid — of my mother striding out across St Patrick’s Bridge in Cork with my brother in the push chair. That picture would now be around 70 years old.

What was striking then, as opposed to now, is the contrasting state of the bridge.

I recall from that family photo how pristine the stonework was. Today it gives me no pleasure to say that one of Cork’s most iconic structures is in a shockingly filthy condition.

Wonderful work has been done over recent ears in the enhancement of our second city.

The time is now overdue to add St Patrick’s Bridge to that list.
