Hard to call which politician most deserves derision

While the behaviour of some politicians attracts derision, President Michael D Higgins deserves respect, writes Shaun Connolly.

It was the week of the ‘Ms’. Offensive remarks about “midgets”, risible remarks by Michelle Mulherin, and sexist remarks by Michael Lowry framed a very sad seven days in Irish politics.

Paul Murphy, TD, proved that while he may be anti-austerity, he is not anti-midget. He condemned the use of the term by his fellow water-protestors to describe the president — even though he defended their right to politicise the head of State.
