We possibly forgot the Government was only still in its initiation stage when the Troika took charge, making our leaders their stooges and bidding them act accordingly.

Will the Government learn from its mistakes?

Only since they left, has the Government shown how it wants to rule. And what a mess they have made of it.

The only person smiling over the past year is former Environment Minister Phil Hogan.

He created Irish Water, then passing the buck, without even leaving operational instructions, he skips it to Brussels for a plum job as an Agricultural High Commissioner.

Good luck to him if he can provide the goods for Ireland — only time will tell.

What followed was a year of political and economic instability that left this country on the brink of being ungovernable.

But now we have a new year and all we can do is hope they have learned something: that they need to begin to govern with wisdom and integrity.
