Now that there is an outpouring of concern about addressing homelessness, let us insist on the diverse needs of those who are without a place to call home being met.

The Taoiseach and other Government representatives have commented on the human tragedy of dying on the street this week. I’d like to think they might have the humility and intelligence to pick up a phone and consult Fr Peter McVerry before saying or doing anything further.

I would also like to think that they would join the dots between austerity, imposed poverty and homelessness and call an early election. Too much to ask?
