In a country which is the envy of most European countries with over 3,000 miles of clear ocean to the west and the annual washing of weather systems from the west, we have still managed to pollute our surface and ground water since the 1950s.

We are spending millions of taxpayers’ money in fruitless firefighting with chemicals in our water that are banned in other countries because of adverse health effects.

Our forefathers may not have much but they drank clean spring water from streams and wells many of which are now filled over or polluted. This is one of the most important issues to debate in the context of water charges and one wonders why it is not happening?
