Politicians must lead by example in the Dáil
I can see many commendable initiatives in the reform proposals, but these will never be achieved in what is likely to be perceived as an arid dysfunctional vacuum.
Much emphasis is made of inexcusable underperformance. However, one of the factors that inspires impeccable performance is good example.
The Oireachtas has a critical role to play in this context. Regrettably, the Houses of the Oireachtas has taken on the image over the past decade of a doss house.
It would therefore be nonsensical to expect high standards of performance from public servants if they continue to discern politicians as mere cheerleaders.
