It was with great interest I read your article ‘Concern at Proposed Aran Island Fish Farm’ (Irish Examiner, September 20).

BIM can’t be allowed dismiss global research

Donal Maguire of Bord Iascaigh Mhara puts a single study published by the Department of Agriculture’s Marine Institute ahead of a global meta-analysis of 300 papers which states salmon farming has a detrimental impact on wild salmon and sea trout. If Mr Maguire were a private citizen offering an opinion that directly contrasts to the consensus agreed by 300 others, one might regard him as a harmless eccentric. But, he is a representative of BIM, the agency behind the mega salmon farms.

To use his voice to dismiss reasoned opinion and risk Ireland’s environment and coastal marine heritage shows serious lack of integrity.
