As a lifelong vegetarian, she knows all about this. “Don’t define yourself by what you do or don’t eat,” she writes. “Being vegetarian is a culinary choice, not a personality.”

She also advises not to talk about the digestive nitty gritty (“Please stop talking about your poo”), and reminds us that becoming a preachy vegetarian “is the culinary equivalent of becoming a fanatical athiest”. Banging on about it makes people want to reach for the foie gras, she says, so for the sake of the animals, “have a hot cup of shut up”.
