Knotweed must be rooted out now

Re Cllr Michael Gleeson’s letter (August 1) about the proliferation of Japanese knotweed in this country — I agree that it’s time the authorities (Dept of Agriculture, etc) woke up and took this devastating weed seriously.

I had not heard of this “plant” until I read about it in a newspaper. That article sent a chill down my spine. I dare our authorities to print a fact guide about knotweed and distribute a copy to every household in this country.

The spread of this weed, which I observed first-hand on a visit to Kenmare recently, is a minor catastrophe.
