Political way forward by Arthur Griffith

Arthur Griffith was a member of the Volunteers and at the Howth gunrunning.

He rejected John Redmond’s call to join the British army but as a nationalist leader he offered a political way forward.

He said: “Ireland is not at war with Germany. She has no quarrel with any continental power. England is at war with Germany and Mr Redmond has offered England the services of the ‘National Volunteers’ to defend Ireland.
