Israelis aim to minimise civilian casualties

Fergus Finlay in his opinion piece (July 22) cynically assumes that the Israeli Defence forces (IDF) engage in indiscriminate attacks.

However, in doing so, Mr Finlay overlooks several key facts.

One, the IDF make use of leaflets, phone calls, text messages and roof knocking in an attempt to minimise civilian casualties — unlike Hamas.

Two, on July 15 Hamas rejected a proposed ceasefire by Egypt. Hamas had the opportunity to end the war.

Three, Israel agreed to a five-hour ceasefire for humanitarian reasons on July 16, as Israel did during Cast Lead.

These facts are not the hallmark of an army who engage indiscriminately.

Finally, from Mr Finlay’s description of the shells, it suggests the IDF are using White Phosphorus. However, to my knowledge, the reports only started surfacing after ground troops entered Gaza suggesting the White Phosphorus is being used as a smokescreen — not as a weapon.
