Fishing needs drowned out by Defence portfolio

The Cabinet reshuffle has impacted an already oppressed fishing industry.

Fishing needs drowned out by Defence portfolio

Adding the Defence portfolio to the Agriculture, Food and the Marine ministry makes no sense. The management of the Irish fishing industry, which is arguably our greatest natural resource, is subsumed within the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, whereas, in previous administrations, it was presided over by a minister of State.

The Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, when in opposition, denounced this situation, and promised that, in office, he would create a dedicated ministry for Fishing. Ireland is only entitled to 23% of the fish catch in its territorial waters and this requires a strong minister capable of negotiating with our European peers, and securing an equitable fish quota, commensurate with our legitimate entitlement.
