Furious at Dr Eva’s diabetes claim

It is with shock, anger and deep dismay I write to you after reading an article featured in your paper regarding Dr Eva Orsmond and her claims to ‘reverse’ type 2 Diabetes (Life/Style, April 30).

Her comments that she believes the majority of people with type 2 diabetes have ‘self inflicted’ their condition and should be made pay for their medication if they don’t want to reverse it themselves sickened me to my stomach.

These comments are insulting and degrading to those people out there living with the condition, who are genetically predisposed to the condition &/or due to non modifiable risk factors such as ethnic origin or age. Not all people who develop type 2 diabetes are overweight and have done nothing to bring the condition on themselves as she suggests. Articles and comments like this feed into the perception and stereotypes that plague people with type 2 diabetes and serve no purpose in dispelling the myths that surround diabetes in general.
