A hole in water charges plan

“There’s a hole in the bucket dear Liza dear Liza..” Those of us who are old enough will remember how this song goes: “well fix it dear Henry dear Henry…”

A hole in water charges plan

This song comes to mind when I think of the Government’s crusade in supposedly fixing the leaking water network in the country. Under the guise of saving the taxpayer millions they are now about to enforce on the Irish people one of the great injustices of our time. Water which falls freely from the sky and is collected into treatment and service networks all in the ownership and trust of the Irish people is about to be taken from the people against their will.

Many of us, down through the years, have made financial contributions to countries that are less fortunate than ourselves, to ensure they have adequate water. This government, which is propped up by 100 or so TDs, proposes to wage war on the people by changing the status quo and depriving them of this basic right that they have earned and paid for. They propose to besiege every house depriving them of that right.. This is a form of extortion. It’s what happens in war. If this is allowed to happen it will create bigger and more costly problems than some of the recent crises we’ve had. We know that hundreds of millions have been pumped into Irish Water and nothing at all has happened yet.
