Criminals kept cosy while pensioners can’t stay warm

I have returned to Ireland having spent 32 years living and working abroad.

Criminals kept cosy while pensioners can’t stay warm

My work took me to a variety of countries many of which would be considered to be “Third World”.

In those so called “Third World” countries I found convicted criminals provided with “basic” facilities while the elderly were treated with dignity, respect and cared for in their “old age”.

Returning to Ireland, in this so-called “advanced” country, I find the legislature, legal and judicial systems seriously concerned for the welfare, well being, care and comfort of convicted criminals.

These criminals have accommodation, (including heat and light), food, medical facilities and family visits available, all at the expense of the taxpayer.

Most elderly persons have worked hard all their lives. One would think they have a reasonable expectation to “relax” and enjoy life in their “twilight” years. Many now find themselves in extremely difficult or near-impossible living conditions.

Government cutbacks on allowances and facilities now mean that many find it difficult to pay their bills. Others cannot afford to heat their homes. Some spend more time in bed just to stay warm. Others live in constant fear their homes will be broken into. Many find it difficult to pay the charges levied on medication.

It seems that those in authority are pushing the elderly of our society to early graves while pandering to the welfare of convicted criminals.

I would suggest that the legislature, legal and judicial systems could learn from so-called Third World countries in relation to care and welfare of the elderly of this country.

Shame on those responsible for this situation.
