Several French Resistance heroes (1939-45) will shortly be duly honoured as their remains are removed to the Pantheon in Paris.

According to President Hollande, “Through their courage, they enabled France to be France”.

A possible parallel in our own country’s narrative concerns the 1916 patriots whose noble-minded sacrifice “saved the soul of Ireland”. (Thomas Clarke).
