Reckless drinking - Discourage killer ‘game’

There are few activities that seem as doomed to failure as one generation lecturing another, younger one about its excesses.

However, sometimes it cannot be avoided. The popularity of social media drinking games is one such instance.The weekend death because a young man took part in “neknomination” proves that point.

All generations of Irish people have been afflicted by alcohol abuse but usually an alcohol-related crisis is the result of a habit developed over time.

The threat posed by this game is that it encourages the consumption of drink on a scale and at a pace well outside the experience of participants, sometimes, as we saw this weekend, with fatal consequences. This “game” is a step too far, a step too dangerous and should be discouraged and rejected by all generations.
