Bravo to Seanad critic

Bravo to Pat Daly when he says that the result of the Seanad referendum is that ‘overpaid, over-pensioned senators’ are “laughing all the way to the bank at the expense of a country in the grip of bankruptcy” (Letters, Nov 26).

Advocates of the rejection of an effort to streamline our democratic institutions by getting rid of some of its more obvious hangers-on in the Seanad replicated the cynicism, hypocrisy and stupidity of the bankrupting of the country during the Celtic Tiger period.

Too many in politics, media and academia, who sang dumb when the country was being bankrupt, are now daily decrying the austerity which is a consequence of the policies of the Celtic Tiger. yet many of these also called for the Seanad’s retention.
