Higher salaries for senators would be a bit rich

Senator David Norris, while resiling from the ‘reforms’ to the Seanad that were proposed by his colleagues during the referendum to safeguard it, is calling for higher salaries for senators to avoid what he calls “the waste of time, energy and paper on bean-counting pettifoggery.” (Letters, Oct 23).

Higher salaries for senators would be a bit rich

Surely, this prominent commentator can see the irony of his comments in this bankrupt country.

If more time, energy and paper had been expended during the Celtic Tiger on ‘bean counting’, the risk of bankruptcy from un-affordable policies might have been foreseen.
