The news yesterday that a further 250 jobs are being created nationally may not be exactly an excuse for unbridled joy. After all, we still have in the region of 400,000 people unemployed. However, small though the number may be, it still offers hope.

International professional services company EY (formerly Ernst and Young) is creating 80 jobs, while online travel firm TripAdvisor has announced 50 jobs for Dublin. But what is most gratifying is that the bulk of 120 jobs is being provided by an Irish concern.

McMahon Healthcare Group, the developer of Cairnhill Nursing Home, which opened yesterday in Co Wicklow, said its new positions will include catering, managerial and support roles.

While attracting foreign investment is very important for future growth and jobs, more attention should be given to helping homegrown enterprises.
