Plans to develop a nationwide network of rural cycling lanes on secondary roads have been put in jeopardy by An Bord Pleanála.

It has refused permission for Kerry County Council to proceed with improvements to N86, a scenic but dilapidated route from Tralee to Dingle that has been earmarked for a €65 million upgrade.

The new road layout was to have included a cycleway along its 28km length. It would be separated by a grass verge to provide a safe way for cyclists to enjoy the beauty of the countryside without having to compete with motorised traffic.
