Councillors in charge?

Maurice O’Connell (Letters, Sept 7) justifies the elitist Senate by saying we elected the councillors who elect the senators, and we elected the Taoiseach who appoints them.

The public does not know for whom councillors voted in the Senate election. We might as well let our councillors elect the President, TDs, senators and appoint the judiciary. The Troika might approve of the savings made and wonder if the result could be worse.

Finally, our complex financial mess is the product of many of the third level geniuses whose elitist Senate voting rights Mr O’Connell supports, and whose favoured defence is ‘systemic failure’. Even they don’t understand some of the ‘financial products’ they created, let alone why they failed.
