Nothing rebellious about ‘Rebels’ now

It is instructive that your correspondents Fr Butler (Letters, Aug 23) and Pat Kelly (Letters, Aug 28) had to delve deeply into the dim distant realms of mythology and ancient history to find some dubious justification for the term ‘Rebel Cork’.

However interesting and enlightening, their musings do not deter from the fact that we present day Corkonians have no genuine claim to be rebels or rebellious.

The irrefutable fact is, we continue to demonstrate that we are obsequious, docile and subservient in the extreme.

Just like the rest of the country, we have meekly succumbed without a whimper, to the home-grown jackboot-driven austerity measures, perpetrated on the innocent public by a culpable and corrupt political class and their cronies, cushioned by self-granted obscene salaries, pensions and expenses.

Rather than live on totally deluded with false feelings of rebellion in our hearts, I suggest we simply raise the white flag of abject surrender to our betters.
