IT’S been a bad year for wild fires in California and the one that caught the attention of the world media last week was the ‘Rim Fire’ which spread into Yosemite National Park.

There were reports of fire-fighters gallantly battling to save homes, San Francisco’s water supply and the park’s iconic Giant Sequoias.

The trees were never really at risk. The larger Sequoias in Yosemite are around 3,000 years old and over that life span they have survived countless wild fires. They protect themselves with a deep layer of soft, spongy bark which they can re-grow after the fire. In fact they need wild fires to reproduce.
