Let Heffernan do lap of honour at Croke Park

First was the emotional city centre ceremony, which was followed a few nights’ later by another marvellous homecoming at Togher.

The organisers of both events must be complimented as it also gave everybody the opportunity of celebrating his accomplishment at a local level. However, his notable feat should be recognised on the national stage as well, and there is an appropriate and glorious opportunity to do just that at the All-Ireland hurling final.

Prior to the start of the replayed All-Ireland senior football final between Kerry and Galway in 2000, Olympic silver medallist Sonia O’Sullivan did a lap of honour around the pitch, which not only acknowledged her tremendous achievement, but her participation also enhanced the great occasion. Rob Heffernan should be afforded a similar opportunity on Sunday, Sept 8.
