East Berlin still resembled a smoking ruin, the Russians having looted every piece of useful machinery, down to bicycles and sewing machines.

To witness, within 30 years, the resurgence of Western Europe and the creation of the EEC, with a duty-free trading block and freedom of movement of all individuals and capital, was nothing short of miraculous.
