Government silence on US military flights

What an amazing week last week was for Irish neutrality.

The role of successive Irish governments in the misnamed ‘war on terror’ was exposed by the report from the Open Society Justice Initiative titled “Globalising Torture: CIA Secret Detention and Extraordinary Rendition”, in which it was demonstrated Shannon Airport played a significant role in the CIA’s controversial rendition programme.

Silence ensues from the current Government as US troops keep on rolling through Shannon on a daily basis.

Next we got Anders Fogh Rasmussen inviting us to join Nato and Minister Shatter announcing that Ireland is sending Irish troops to Mali under British command. That neanderthal organisation Nato should have been disbanded years ago and certainly at the end of the Cold War.

The western interventions in Mali have almost nothing to do with Islamic extremism, and almost everything to do with the acquisition of resources, notably minerals, and an accelerating rivalry with China.

No western troops should be there, not least Irish troops.

Can we not expect more from Ministers Shatter and Gilmore than to obediently bleat the mantra of perpetual war emanating from Washington, London and now Paris, while they impose perpetual austerity on ordinary citizens?
