A meeting of the Irish Medical Organisation, the doctor’s trade union, was held in Mullingar at the weekend to discuss the deal that it struck with its chief executive, George McNeice.

This deal seems to have threatened the solvency of the IMO and has raised all kinds of questions.

Health Minister James Reilly was a member of the IMO remuneration committee in 2003, when the deal was made. After the weekend meeting, one doctor said the matter was still as “clear as mud.” The deal has provoked so much anger that more than a hundred doctors have cancelled their IMO membership.
