Archbishop’s Bethany comments off the mark

I wish to comment on Victoria White’s sobering article (Opinion, Jan 3) — “Justice needed for the survivors of and victims of Bethany House abuse”.

As a survivor of the hellhole called the Bethany Home, I was greatly saddened to listen to the newly enthroned Archbishop of Armagh, and Primate of all Ireland, Dr Richard Clarke, as he dismissed the connection between the Church of Ireland and the Bethany Home. He sought to back up this claim, by explaining the fact that his “radar” was not up to speed in this matter. I would like to remind Dr Clarke that my mother’s family would have been very much made aware of the accuracy of their local Church of Ireland clergyman. By using his radar, he was able to plot her journey from Co Meath, to the Bethany Home in Dublin, and whose family would have been one of the most upstanding families in Ireland, as my father’s family was as well.

I can assure Dr Clarke that the Church of Ireland rector of Zion parish who arranged my baptism, had me on his radar. The Church of Ireland team were still working with their radar to get me to Co Wicklow, whose local rector, with his radar, happily signed my illegal adoption forms.

I pray to God that you sir, you will get your radar fixed urgently.
