In the last two years Labour has failed to deliver in every significant pre-election promise and every issue directly affecting their voter constituency — maintaining child benefit levels, the household charge, the new property tax, home care for the elderly, care for the disabled, the promissory notes — the list goes on.
With Fine Gael you know what you’re getting, they never change their spots; they deliver the policies that their voter constituency, the professional/middle classes and aspiring professional middle classes, voted for.
Labour, on the other hand, are supposed to represent the working man/woman, unemployed, etc., but in relation to all the above issues, they have rolled over in response to Fine Gael bullying.
What would great Labour figures of the past like Connolly and Larkin, or more recent stalwarts like Corish and Spring, think of the present Labour Party?
Gilmore doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as those great men.
I predict that in the next general election Labour will go the same way as the PDs and the Green Party i.e to political oblivion; it can’t come soon enough!
