Credit union deserves former bank building

The recent closure of the former Cork Savings Bank on Lapps Quay marks the end of a long era of banking in one of Cork’s first buildings, opposite Cork City Hall.

The Cork Savings Bank building has a very honourable history serving the people of Cork as a Penny Bank and a secure place for savings for generations of Cork people.

Cork Savings Bank was fortunate to have a board of local voluntary directors from the world of business manufacturing and trade unions. Well over 100 years ago the bishops of the Catholic and Protestant communities were represented on the board of the bank.
