Children’s hospital should be outside Dublin

Why should the proposed National Children’s Hospital be built in Dublin?

We consistently hear the opinion of various commentators on the subject who are predominantly from Dublin or its immediate surrounds.

They all say that same thing — Dublin is perfect because it has the Dart, the Luas, train stations and taxis for the convenience of people from the country.

It also has teaching hospitals nearby.

Trains, buses, trams and taxis cost money.

Driving from the far-flung corners of the country costs money and takes a hell of a lot of time.

Going to Dublin with a sick child is a nightmare journey for any parent. funding it and all the expenses that go with commuting to and around the capital is an added burden on most people who would pay the earth to have their child well.

If our politicians had any other interest other than political in the welfare of sick children, they would clearly recognise that the most ideal and humane location for the Children’s Hospital is a central location in middle Ireland.

A greenfield site, started from scratch, purpose-built for the present and the future is the proper place for this much discussed hospital.

There are rail networks, bus routes and even airports in middle Ireland. They can be upgraded without huge expense if the political will is there.

In the interest of fairness, compassion and humanity the location of the National Children’s Hospital should be decided by a national vote.
