Opponents of the €100 million annual subsidy to fee-paying schools claim that it subsidies a privileged education for an exclusive elite.

Supporters of the subsidy claim that it saves the taxpayer money as the State is only paying the teachers’ salaries while parents pay for the running and capital costs.

Surely there must be a way of removing privilege from education whilst also saving taxpayers’ money, and there is.
