Cut my pay by 25%. It makes sense

In response to the opinion piece in Monday’s Irish Examiner by eight Fine Gael TDs challenging the Government’s stance on the Croke Park agreement, all high earners, be they public or private sector, must accept a significant reduction in their incomes if we are to get out of our difficulties.

We urgently need an ‘economic road map’ for the next four years in place of difficult once-off budgets, each more contentious than the last. We would then, at least, know where we are going.

As a well-paid public servant, I agree with the Fine Gael TDs that it would be fair and just that my salary be reduced to contribute to the stability of our public finances. It would be in my self-interest to take a pay cut, rather than risk greater losses in the instability that will ensue if we do not regain control over our finances.
