Let’s admire the skills of hurlers, please

I take issue with John Bannon in the article ‘You are the ref’ (Aug 27) where, in particular, he states Conor O’Mahony of Tipperary should have got a red card for striking T J Reid with his hurley.

Let’s admire the skills of hurlers, please

That is a totally unfair statement as it was no more than an accidental glancing blow and was seen from close quarters by the referee.

Did he only see the indiscretions of Tipperary players? Tommy Walsh and Jackie Tyrell were altar boys so, according to Bannon’s criteria. How did Corbett get a cut to the side of his face through his helmet? Paul Curran’s opponent was just as guilty early on whereas Curran was guilty of throwing his hurley at the ball. Padraic Maher was guilty of a wild pull at an opponent who was dragging and pulling out of him as he tried to get away with the ball.
