The Irish Business Against Litter group’s annual stick in the eye about our very poor record on litter in public places is a stark but undeniable counterpoint to the celebratory nature of the excellent Tidy Towns movement’s wonderful achievements.

That makes this year’s IBAL report, that 76%, of all towns and cities are now clean, all the more welcome. The gap, after years of campaigning and needling, between the ideal and the reality is closing.

That does not mean that we can rest on our laurels because there is, as anyone cursed by fly-by-night illegal dumping will confirm, a lot more to do. But, for a moment at least we can congratulate the IBAL on the success of its campaign.
