I was doing some research for a book and came across this quote from the late American philosopher, Henry Louis Mencken.

Philosophical thought on democracy

“Under democracy, one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule. Both parties normally succeed.”

Pretty well sums up the situation here.
