The vandals who caused €50,000 worth of damage to memorial headstones in Limerick’s Mount St Lawrence cemetery (Irish Examiner, Jul 17) must be tried in the Circuit Court so that a deterrent sentence may be imposed.

Graveyard desecration

Dealing with such offences in the District Court is a waste of time.

If €50,000 damage was done to a business premises, the case would go to the Circuit Court where stiffer penalties can be applied by a judge. To emphasise how seriously people feel about the desecration of graveyards, such cases must be sent forward for hearing in the Circuit Court.
