May I endorse Ted Neville’s suggestion (Jun 19) of remembering the Irishmen and women who answered the Carlist appeal to join in coalition with General Franco and his fellow-mutineers in the Crusade to overthrow the Spanish Republic?

In the van of those remembering that episode should be the Minister for Justice and Defence, Alan Shatter, with his enthusiasm for remembrance.

After all, Fine Gael’s first leader, General Eoin O’Duffy, led those Irishmen and women to Spain and back.
