Clifford’s comments on Keane praised

Thank you to Michael Clifford for his outstanding article on Roy Keane (Irish Examiner, Jun 16) and his comments on the Irish team/fans’ attitude and performance.

Clifford’s comments on Keane praised

My compliments to Mr Clifford for his excellent assessment of the motivations of Mr Keane for his negative remarks.

Surely it must be accepted that this Irish team completely over-achieved by reaching the last 16 of the European Championship. Does any genuine fan really feel that we are in the top 16 in Europe? If we examine the inequality of some of the teams which failed to make it, I think that it puts the achievement in perspective.

We have a team full of journeyman pros who have huge pride in the jersey, hence the qualification.

I abhor the comments of Keane and wish I had the translation of Trap’s comments made about Keane because I am pretty sure that I would agree wholeheartedly with him.

This nonsense that Keane’s actions now and in Saipan are those of a perfectionist who cannot tolerate sub-standard performances is nonsense from my standpoint. He likes to hear the sound of his own voice, has never proved anything as a coach or manager, and is now plying his trade as a highly paid hurler on the ditch, a role which I believe will suit him perfectly.
