Why we don’t need advice from US

Listening to the Business Programme on RTÉ Radio (Jun 2) presented by George Lee, I was very surprised to hear George asking American Ambassador Rooney what economic advance he would give the Government.

Surely, as an economist himself, George should have been aware that the US is now the largest debtor nation in world history, owing billions of dollars, and is not in any position to advise anybody.

In contrast, after the Second World War the US was the richest nation on earth, thanks to not being either invaded or bombed, and its factories being able to mass produce goods and weapons unhindered.

On one occasion, a ship carrying Russian gold to pay for tanks, was sunk by a German submarine.

Maybe if the Pentagon hadn’t such an influence in successive American governments, things could change for the better and the Pentagon would learn a lesson from history that no empire ever lasts.
