Church and State

This weekend the Eucharistic Congress is being held in Dublin.

This is a purely religious event, in this case that of the Catholic Church.

Enda Kenny is entitled to attend at the main event in Croke Park if he wishes, but he is not entitled to attend as Taoiseach of the country representing the Irish people.

In the Dáil two weeks ago, the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said that he is in favour of the separation of Church and State. This is the hallmark of a republic.

Now is the time to prove our belief in the republic, rather than pay lip service to it.
