TD expenses are zoned

Your reader Brendan Casserly (Zonal Solution to TDs Expenses, May 4) will, no doubt, be happy to hear that the ‘zonal’ system of managing TD’s travel allowances that he advocates has actually been in place since 2010.

He argues that the size of the allowances should be determined by the distance their constituency is from the national parliament. It already is. He also suggests that these allowances should be paid on a monthly basis. These allowances are published on our website (www.oireachtas.ie) but the purpose of these payments is explained in detail.
