Household charge needs sober approach

In his article on the household levy, Jim Power compared not paying it to a drunk driver: both are breaking the law.

Household charge needs sober approach

This is offensive to the people who march for democracy and also to those whose family members have been the victims of drink driving.

Mr Power said the property tax in a suburb of Boston is $8,000, but didn’t say that in the States they do not pay ridiculously high stamp duty (which was our unofficial property tax).

A pragmatic, democratic approach might be a tiered system of relief from the new levies in proportion to the amount and recentness of your stamp duties.

Alternatively, we could mail the €100 to Angela, PO Box, Germany, with a photo of a derelict playground on which the money was not spent.
