Vote for EU presidency logo should be extended

ON November 30 last, the Irish public was invited to vote online to choose one of four logos to visually represent Ireland’s presidency of the European Union in 2013.

Vote for EU presidency logo should be extended

Votes can be cast at www.eu2013.ie up to 5pm on Saturday, December 31. The object of the competition is to allow everyone with internet access to select the logo for the presidency, which will be the starting point for how the presidency will present itself to the other member states.

That just circa 15,000 have voted to date in this process reflects badly on Irish citizens’ interest in the Irish presidency and the important part it plays in promoting Ireland’s role in the EU policy and decision making process, and its economic relationship with Europe and the globalised world. In the competition that selected the logo for the very successful 2004 Irish presidency, over 80,000 votes were registered. The Irish in Europe Association considers the voting period to be far too short and that the launch of this competition was overshadowed by the budget debate, the Euro crisis, Christmas travel and festivities.
