Where was democracy when we need it most?

I would ask the following:

Where was the democracy when:

* Politicians came to our doors before the elections making all sorts of promises, yet once elected they totally ignore those who elected them and followed the party whip.

* Cowen and Lenihan engaged with IMF/EU without consulting their colleagues, the Dáil or the electorate.
