THE news of Ireland’s further depressed economy is a reminder that the recession is not just for Christmas but probably for life.

Christmas has become a festival of inflated expectations.

On a recent trip to Dublin my experience of the fury of this year’s Christmas shopping gave the impression that the recession had taken a holiday.
