Adoption agreements

YOUR editorial (Nov 29) incorrectly states that bilateral agreements for the purposes of inter country adoption with countries such as Ethiopia have collapsed in recent years and concludes that no country should allow children to be bought and sold.

Adoption agreements

Ireland has never had a bilateral agreement with Ethiopia and the inferred connection between a collapsed agreement and child trafficking is inaccurate and misleading.

As an adoptive parent, I welcome Ireland’s ratification of the Hague Convention which places the best interests of the child above all else. Your editorial fails to have due regard to the absolute validity of my child’s and other children’s adoption and is not in their best interests.
